Cookin’ them Eggs Backcountry Style
January 26th, 2012 | by admin |
Trying out a new cooking method to possibly add variety to the backcountry meals. Tasted good. In addition, how to eat oatmeal with easy cleanup in the backcountry. When I was told this I just thought “Duh, why haven’t I thought of this?”

It’s almost like you’re poaching the egg. Also you might want to be careful with this technique. I don’t want to sound like a crazy anti plastic hippie but when soft plastic gets hot it releases a chemical that has been found to cause cancer. Usually you can taste this chemical when the plastic gets really hot like a bottle of water in a hot car. Hince the “plastic” taste. But remember this is only a problem when an extreme amount of the chemical has been digested.

Ok you put plastic in your mouth everyday, Water bottles, Toothbrush, Pens, And what ever else you can think of you chew on. So please stop say that this will harm you. Get over the fact that is a plastic bag.

When we’re 75 years old, it might not matter. . . but I’m concerned about the plastic getting into the food. Those kinds of things seem to build up and cause problems over time. The younger we are, the more time we have for these things to affect us. There have been a lot of rumors about aluminum foil, but I think that using it would still be healthier than freezing and cooking in plastic.

I need to bite the bullet and buy a pocket rocket.

Been doing this for awhile, only change I make is I use powdered or freeze dried pre-measured egg mix in my baggie. Reduces the risk of spilling/puncture and prolongs how long it can stay in the pack. Add appropriate amount of water when your ready to cook.

what kind of stove are you using?
By kingolaf99 on Jan 26, 2012 | Reply
@Teknodaddy Exactly. Survival experts show boiling water in plastic for EMERGENCIES. Not to be used on a just for fun basis. I know everyone says that everything gives you cancer, but this seriously will haha.

Great ideas, keep’m coming!

Theoretically a great idea. Unfortunately, the plasticizers released when you heat the plastic are carcinogenic, so I would NOT advise you do this, and certainly not on a regular basis. . . sorry. Just my 2p

would just be madness to ruin ur trip with liquid poo in the middle

@Warbeast911 I would freeze them to help last longer. But I might make it the dinner that night on a backpacking trip. That way not worried about it spoiling or giving it more time to spill as it thaws.

Next time I go camping, I’ll have to give the omlet a try. I’m like you hate clean up. Did the oatmeal that way on our wiinter camp out last year. Also built a nice fire using sharp corners of wood. Wonder where I learned that. It was something no learned in Boy Scouts that is for sure. I planning a camping trip with a friend that lives in Utah and I called him about the omlet So it on the list to do I. The spring out there. Thanks for the idea

i’ve taken eggs into the field lots of times and we always tend to leave let in the day so I freeze the eggs and double up on the ziploc bags and have the eggs the next day sometime. . . it’s never failed. . . good video!
