How important is a visa when backpacking?

March 11th, 2010 | by admin |

Im going to go backpacking in Europe, and i was just wondering if a visa is really that necessary. I’ve heard that its common for people to be paid under the table. I’ll be going for a year, primarily in Ireland.
Thanks!

The more paperwork you have, the better it will be for you. Get as many visas as you can and always carry your passport with you wherever you go. While it’s unlikely that you will be asked to "show your papers" once you are inside Ireland, that is not true of all European countries.

With the fading of the days of the Celtic Tiger, you will have a harder time getting even "under the table" jobs in Ireland. Better to get a job at home and save up. Travel really cheap and you may not have to get a job while you are over there.

Don’t forget that other economies are much smaller that the USA economy, and so foreign and illegal labor is even more easily noticed. Also businesses, towns and the business communities are smaller, so word gets around more quickly if someone is doing something untoward.

With the bad economy, foreigners will have a hard time getting any work. And if you get caught, you will be deported and it will hurt your ability to travel anywhere else.

Unless you desire to get yourself in possibly serious trouble if you get caught, then get the visa and avoid trouble. You are not at home, you don’t want to break rules – even before you go.

A visa is necessary if you’re planning to work. They can be really strict when you arrive as well and will want a detailed itinerary. The economy in Ireland has been hit the hardest by the recession and fall in house prices, so it will probably be a lot harder for you to find a job than you think.
