Age is only one consideration. I suggest you assess your personality and your girlfriends to really know how well you gel together. Backpacking is fun, but you've got to be patient, ready to take responsibility for your decisions or the no decisions. Most people try to cover too many countries in too little time. Do you like to explore museums, hang out at pubs, sleep on trains, wear the same stuff day after day, etc.

This is a temporary marriage, so be ready for all the consequences. I traveled with a friend and we survived our differences. Today we celebrate over 30 years of friendship and have special memories of our Europe tour. It's your spirit that matters more than your ages. Be honest or do a trial run with your partner on the weekend.

Plus keep your backpack load light to avoid being a blimp on the trains, buses and streets. Go minimal and be happy.
References :
http://www.best-backpack-guide.com/how-to-pack-a-backpack.html

At 21 you are certainly old enough to backpack.
If you are mature, it is a good age to backpack alone or with just one friend.
Of course, if you have never had any long travels before you might find going for more than a few weeks lonely, so take that in consideration.

When you stay in hostels you meet people from their late teens to their late seventies, but most will be early twenties.

But if you feel you are not ready yet, you might not be ready and there is nothing wrong in waiting for a few years, and saving up a little more money.
When you get to 26 you will find that the costs go up, as you can no longer get youth reductions, so try to travel in Europe before that age.
