Even if you fly by the seat of your pants still take the time to research about where you are going as that way you will actually know where to go and what to see and miss some great things (like I did in Rome!).

It depends on what you want to do and see! There were heaps of cities and places that I can recommend.
Paris - i liked it as I felt there was lots of things to see and do there.

Prague - is a lovely city, one i did not even contemplate before leaving home but now rates as one of my favourite cities. Its not huge but worth a couple of days and if you can get to Cesky Krumulov thats another wonderful place.

Italy in general is great and I can recommend all the following places:
Verona, venice, bologna, siena, rome, florence..pisa (tower only) and lucca are close to florence and worth seeing and i stayed in a hillside village called Montepulciano which was great.

Amsterdam was ok, its a pretty city and the canals are great but its not huge and 1-2days is all thats needed.
Brussels - the town square is wonderful and the town of Bruges /Brugge is quaint.

Barcelona has some wonderful architecture ( by Gaudi) and worth a look.

There are some other parts of France which are wonderful in central france. but you need to hire a car and visit the wonderful towns in the area eg st cirq lapopie, rocamadour, st cere, figiac, cahors.

For hostel websites try www.hostels.com, www.hostelbookers.com, www.hostelworld.com or www.lonelyplanet.com.
try www.skyscanner.net to look for flights...some of which can be very cheap.
www.eurolines.com for buses..again you can get some cheap bus trips.
Do plan, but leave some leeway to add places in as its worth it.
References :
The general rule of travelling is this: Bring half the clothes and twice the money. It is even more so true when backpacking. Also, try to learn the basics of the language of the country you're in. Even a 'thank you' spoken poorly will do more for you than any translator (well, you know what I mean!). Have fun.
References :
American ex-pat living in Europe.

Watch out for pickpocketers because that is so common to tourists over here. Visiting the Eiffel Tower is a must, but remember watch your bags because they can be sneaky. Also, try to make friends with the locals so they can guide you on what to avoid and what to spend your money on.
Also, it helps to brush up on your French (It really depends on where you plan on going though), but don't waste your time on German, its impossible to get the hang of. And bring a camera and a never ending supply of batteries.
