The importance of Magnetic Declination should be stressed. LARS – Left ADD or Right SUBTRACT or an easier way to remember is East is Least (-) and West is BEST (+). Add or subtract the declination adjustment to your heading / Azimuth.

that’s not his own lingo… i’ve heard the “put red fred in his shed” term from boyscouts, military, SCUBA, hiking/camping instructors so it’s a common phonetic phrase that helps you remember how to use a compass – which is a great way to teach
