Can someone provide me with a list of camping equipment?

February 18th, 2010 | by admin |

I will be going for the first time in January and was wondering what kind of gear is good aside from the obvious like, sleeping bag and a tent.

you will need a sleeping bag, some food to eat unless you want to catch fish to eat some marshmallows and Hersey’s chocolate bars some charcoal to have a family barbecue some flash lights and a tent , unless you have a camper and that’s all I can think of right now.

Oh me! The list can be endless. My husband & I actually kind of "collect" camping gear….I guess you could say. We camp quite often & there are just lots of handy things to have. I list some from the top of my head. You pick & choose.

    Propane stove
    Propane heater
    Propane lanterns
    Flashlights
    Tiki torches
    Air matress
Wire hangers (to straighten out for roasting hot dogs, etc.)
    Glow sticks
    Bug Spray
Dishes (There are paper / plastic, of course. But Wal – Mart
carries some others that are washable & are a great
    investment.)
    TOILET PAPER
    First Aid Kit
Fire Starter logs (Little sticks that get it going fast)
    Instant coffee

The list really is endless. I could go on & on. One more thing that is kind of funny, before I go. Down south, we take a 5 or 10 gallon bucket & some plastic Wal – Mart baggies. Use your imagination. {{: If I can help anymore, let me know. I’m just short on time right this second.

Try the Boy Scout manual (should be available at your local library or the local Council Scout Store).

    They have great lists.

Or search on Boy Scout websites.

If this is your first time it’s important to pick the right tpye and amount of gear so that you wont ruin your trip and not want to go. You can pack endless amounts of things, but weight is a big issue. There are a few questions you should ask yourself before going that will help you know what exactly you need. If you’re not careful, camping supplies can nickle and dime your budget away, or sometimes eat the whole thing with one big item. Try these, and you should be fine:

How serious is your camping trip going to be? (remember, some people camp with only a back pack, knife, matches, and a container for water. these people generally don’t pull up in their jeeps, walk five feet from the parking lot and lay down to sleep next to lots of other campers)

if it’s not going to be to serious, a tent, light weight sleeping bag, a container for water, eat-on-the-go food, toliet paper, and some tool that helps start a fire should be fine. I personally would take a first aid kit. If however you are they type of person that must treat every scratch and bruse, then I would suggest you do. Some campers insist on them. If you do plan on being more serious, you can bring along a camp stove and food you must cook.

Do you know what type of ground you’ll be sleeping on?

If you’re a picky sleeper and must have comfort, you’ll want to look into supplies you lay under youre tent or inside of it to soften the ground. If you’re rather adventurous though, you might not chose anything. There is everything from cots and blow up matresses (both are heavy, sometimes bulky, and can be rather expensive) to light weight cusions you slide underneath your sleeping bag (which still consume space, are a little added weight, but can sometimes be worth the cost and effort)

Do you plan on hiking to where you’re going to sleep at night?

If you are going to, then carry your supplies in a back pack. Hiking increases risk of enjury, and it’s almost garunteed you will get a few minor scratches from thorns and trees (none that really hurt to much, if at all). You’ll will probably then want to carry your first aid kit with you. You may also want a travel poncho if the wheather looks bad and you’re not near a place where you can get shelter. Other then that, nothing extra is needed than before

Are you staying a long time?

If you’re camping over night, almost nothing is needed. The longer you plan on staying, the more supplies you’ll need, and the more compact you’ll want everything to be. A longer trip may be something a beginner wouldn’t want to do with other beginners.

What will the weather be like?

You don’y want to get caught in weather that you’re unprepaired for. Camping in the cold may require thermal sleeping bags and tents properly made for such weather. It it’s raining, you’ll want water proofing on your tent or some way to keep dry. It’s suggested that you know the weather OF THE AREA YOU’LL BE IN before you go. It can really make all the difference (camping in harsh enviornments might not be suggested for new comers, it usually tends to make the experience less enjoyable and more stressful)

As you camp more and more, you’ll learn about products that may suite your individual wants and needs. Every camper is different, and there are many products that let you customize your camping experience.

JUST REMEMBER, MOST THINGS THAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU WILL HAVE TO BE CLEANED, RESTOCKED, OR REPACKED. THE MORE THINGS YOU TAKE, THE MORE CLEAN UP AFTER THE TRIP IS OVER YOU’LL HAVE TO DO :(
