Renting gear is a nightmare. Usually rental gear isn't taken care of so you get stuff that leaks or doesn't work.
References :
Depending on how many people you're looking at, it might be in your best interests to BUY a tent and other gear...a one to two person tent (listed as a 4 person tent, but they would have to be awfully small people and still would have to be very friendly with eachother) can be had for as little as $20. Camping stoves...well, I bought a portable gas grill that runs on propane cylinders for $20 at walmart...with a little juggling, it's perfectly fine for boiling water, heating a pan to scramble eggs, etc.

Other stuff you NEED? A bit of rope for making clothes lines and misc. is a couple bucks. sleeping bags can be had for as little as $20 or as much as $200. If you're car camping, get a blow up mattress and just carry regular bedding. If you're hiking to a camping spot, you'll want to spring for the better sleeping bags as they're lighter and often don't require a separate pad.

I've been known to camp with nothing but a tent, a sleeping bag, a portable bbq grill, some cooking utensils and a flash light....oh, and a cooler. Perfectly comfortable and, hey, we're "roughing" it here.

I know kayakers who carry their gear in their boats and get by with a high end sleeping bag, a couple tarps, a bit of rope, some pegs, a backpacker's stove (some use "catfood can" stoves which you can find plans for on the internet), some matches, a vessel for heating water, a spork, and some dehydrated meals....plus their emergency gear of course (wilderness first aid kit, etc).
