personally I like the fero rod because the magnesium block is larger and heavier and the magnesium shavings don’t add much of an advantage because they take forever to make and then they blow away in the slightest breeze

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17.
Great challenge. I believe we should try all systems before settling on any one way to do things. We may find a better way.

firesteel is the way to go in the wilderness, but if ur in the city the mag block may better suit you being their is a lack of tinder, other than newspapers or trash.

I prefer the blast Match self contained and one hand operation. Best of all it’s just under $20.00

@MrBillTroop73 Thanks for posting this, lots of good posts so far but, this is different and is another thing that I’m looking for. I’ve never heard of this product.

    I agree with 3charter -
I’ve had success with both mag blocks and fire steels – Yet I’ve had Coghlan’s magnesium blocks where the ferro rod has fallen out of them.
Ive had better success with a fire steel and tinder shavings….

I have always carried the Doan Firestarter. It cost a bit more that other brands, but the fero rod is machine crimped into the magnesium block. No glue to dissolve or loosen, and lose your fero rod like other brands.

I have no connection with Doan, I just really like their product.

I like the mag bar with the imbeded fire steel over the fire steel alone. Sure you can gather tinder or take along tinder to start a fire with the fire steel but with the mag block you have 1 more additional option, just shave off the block into a quater size pile of shavings using a saw or knife and then use the flint thats aleady imbeded into the block to light the shavings. The mag shavings are hard to blow out once lit and the shavings also burn hot once lit.

I have never bought or tried the mag block; primarily because i didn’t like how the flint rod is partially submerged. It seems like it would wear out faster than the fully exposed firesteel. And I usually carry tinder with me, so i didn’t really think the magnesium was necessary. But I suppose they each have their place. I’m sure that magnesium comes in handy sometimes.

but i have taken scrapings from the ferro rod and piled them up like the magnesium it doesnt seem to last aslong but it works for me

Have used both…Personally prefer LMF type fire steel. As much as I have scrapped magnesium, it always blows away or accidentally bounced out of the way. Find proper tinder and both will work…I just like the spark on a good fire steel better than a mag block.
