What skills or experiences can I list while applyng for a store who sells camping and fishing equipment?
March 7th, 2010 | by admin |Im filling out an application for a wholesale sports store and im applying for the camping or fishing departments since those are the ones that are open and they want to know if I have specific skills or experiences that I have which pertain to the positions. What should I write down?
if you’re looking for help identifying what skills might apply to that position, so as to figure out if you have ‘em, here’s what comes to mind right offhand:
* respects others.
* knows how to be friendly and courteous.
* responsible.
* capable of dealing with difficult people without blowing a fuse.
* comes to work on time and works the whole shift.
* capable of learning how to operate the computer system.
* sales.
* knows the difference between graphite and fiberglass.
* knows what a spinning rod is and what kind of reel goes on it.
* knows the difference between an extra wide gap offset shank and and a kahle.
* knows the difference between coleman fuel and propane.
there’s more, I just got tired of typing.

Tell them about the time you got sprayed by a skunk. That would make them smile and they would like you.

Tell them you were in boy scouts for 4 years and have learned to love the outdoors from your experiences in the scouts. I would also talk about any fishing experiences you’ve had. Tell them you love to find out what is biting and on which lake, so that they will think you will be able to give customers advice about what kind of tackle or bait to buy. Make up stories about a camping or fishing trip. Tell them you’ve fished on a high number of lakes and that you think you can bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the job.

How ’bout starting with the truth? And since ONLY you know what that is and what your "specific skills or experiences" are, why are you asking us to fill in the blanks for you? Don’t pretend you are something which you are not. As your boss, or your employer, I and professionals like me will see through your facade almost immediately and you’ll be back on the street where you can learn some more skills and experiences. If you were coming to work for me, I would much rather you came honest and willing to learn. You and I will BOTH be farther ahead right from the very start. Some of the most impressive employees I ever hired proved their willingness to work (and to learn) by asking a lot of questions rather than by trying to fake their way along by pretending they already had all the answers. Remember that old saying: "Honesty is the BEST policy"? That applies to filling out job applications as well. Good luck with that. I hope you get the job.

Experience will speak volumes. Tell them how long you’ve been fishing and camping, if you’ve won any awards (MAs for example), if you’ve been in the Boy Scouts, etc. That will make a world of difference. These places like those who have been there. Just look at their commercials.
