Survival Bug Out Camping – Knives, Lean-to and Hammock

July 25th, 2010 | by admin |

The Urban Survivalist team goes out to the Northern Californian mountains on a bug-out style camping trip. We didn’t have any tents or sleeping bags. Just us and our constructed shelters. For food, Jon and Nate enjoyed their first Mountain House Meal, and Matt had a hot can of beans.

Great video guys. I know you guys are young, but I think all of you learned a valuable lesson. Just think how much more miserable you would have been if it was raining and snowing. There are a lot of people who think they can run out in the bush with a plastic garbage bag and a 3″ knife and believe they will be ok for months. Tent is temporary shelter for you while you build a sustainable shelter. Get tools like an axe, saw, large tarp, warm clothes and bed gear, shotgun.

Nittinfancy has it right. FIREPOWER….Capabilities is the key #1 Great Shelter, followed by #2 Fire #3 water #4 food LOTS. Be realistic carry great gear like the knife. However carry all great gear like a tent, a good wood cutting tool other than the knife. And most of all … A GROUP OF GREAT FRIENDS (You had that covered) Take care hope you got a lot out of you trip. hope to hear from you soon

A lot of You Tubers advocate Camping/Survival/BOB gear as multi purpose, light, and sometimes inconsistent. REALLY REALLY- Are you going to cut all your wood with a knife? (Start to widdling) REALLY REALLY- Are you going to Live under a tarp with your $200 knife? Then their is the rifle. REALLY REALLY- are you going to hunt game to survive. Get a fishing pole find a pond. Most of the so called 72hr BOB people only have 3 days food and starve after the third. Carry top notch gear

fire making and wood. Forget the cotton balls and knife junk. Get a Woodsman pal, it weighs the same and does much better job. Cotton balls???. Just get a jar of vasoline grab some kindling and put it on it and light it and cook. Again awesome campsite and good video. I hope other see it. I will rate it

No my number# 2 problem Cutting wood with a cool looking knife WOW. You use lots of energy that you would need to survive pounding away on a piece of wood. Granted Axes use tons of energy too. You could do better with pruning shares or a saw of a type. A lot of people have to have the Awesome Tom Brown Traker knife. All this is show boat crap. All this fire making, wood chopping is waste. Simplicity is best. Get a Woodsman Pal if you like to hack a wood, why wreck your knife

I tried to tell someone who insisted that the TARP/WOOL BLANKET setup for winter is dangerous and a failure. You can see his video on ‘Winter camping” He froze in his back yard in his tarp and wool blanket crap with first day of snow. He was to busy selling his belief he was blindsided to the truth. Really Everybody dumps the tent so they can carry other cool equipment like (AMMO, NIGHT VISION, WEB GEAR Ect). This is not cool, SHELTER IS NUMBER ONE CONCERN OVER WATER FOOD FIRE.

Great video, I like your honesty. I have been trying to tell everyone get a tent. Tarps fail in the winter and are for survival mode only. Hammocks are seasonal and need good bottom protection from wind. I like the fact that you have friends that like doing the same concepts together. I will stick to the first problem …Shelter.. SHELTER is no#1 very good tent (small lightweight is great. You will die is 3hours without good shelter. The wind takes your body heat away

@Gorntz I’ll have to keep that in mind next time. I got up twice in the middle of the night and once in the morning to gather more wood! But we would have had more of course if all the ground wood wasn’t rotted out =/

Thumbs up for being honest! You know what they say… “Gather enough firewood for the night, then gather three times that amount.”
