I am trying to buying a hiking backpack. When it says, for example, REI UL 45 pack"- what does 45 pack mean?

This is my first time buying a backpack and trying to get the best one to suit my ability. Any advice will help. Thank you.

generally it means capacity of pack in liters (I deal more in cu. inches but the rest of the world is using metric)
but don’t count on it

    its volume of pack. rei ul45 is a nice over night pack for experienced ultra light back packers its very hard for a beginner to load correctly.
