I would like to begin doing a lot more hiking and backpacking since the Rockies are right in my backyard.?

Does anyone have any practical knowledge that they can pass on to me? I would like some tips and hints that are something that are usually overlooked when embarking on this hobby/sport.

Buying quality gear is a good place to start. Having lighweight, durable, warm/cool gear will help you enjoy the experience. No need to go out and buy it all at once, but over your first few trips you will understand what is most important to you. It’s expensive – but after a few hikes you will understand what you are paying the extra money for.

Start with short hikes and work your way up to an overnight session. Then keep it up until you are taking 5 and 6 day trips.

Make sure you have detailed maps of where you are traveling.

Each trip is what you make it. Bring a friend and see things you want to see. I enjoy waterfalls and high mountain peaks. The views from up high is a major reason I start out on a hike. I’ll go all weekend for one vista view.

Be Prepared.
