Selecting the Right Tents for Camping

    July 30th, 2010

How to Choose Good Tents for CampingBuying the most suitable tents for camping is not as simple as going to your local shopping center and buying one. Before you purchase any tents for camping you need to think about what time of year you’re using it for, how easy it is to set up, how well ventilated the it is and whether or not it will endure challenging weather. A tent that you usually camp with during the summer probably won’t be suitable for camping in the early winter season where there may be snow. Lets take a look at some of the things to look for when selecting the appropriate tents for camping. PurposeThe tent for camping you select depends on the activity are using the it for. For example, say you’re car camping, then the weight or size of the tent you pick will not really matter. Also if you are going kayaking, the tents can be stashed inside the kayaks so its fine if they’re on the heavier end. Weight is important if you are planning to go backpacking. You probably won’t want to lug around a large tent. A good backpacking tent generally weighs 5-6 lbs. Time of YearTents for camping are categorized by the season they will be used for. 1. All-season: these tents are used the entire year. However, they are not really suitable for wintery conditions. 2. Three-season: these work well for every season but not in harsh wintery conditions. 3. 4 season tents: all season tents for camping are great for family summer camping as well as winter camping. The 3-season tent is extremely versatile. Smaller tents are great for backpacking and bigger tents are perfect for family camping. Water ProofIt is important to think about whether or not a tent will be resistant to water. Your tent should shelter you against moisture from rain and dew. Tents for camping often have water-resistant coating that still allow for ventilation. Many tents also have floors tailored into them that prevent dew. Think about how important is staying dry is for you when selecting a tent. Difficulty of Setting UpYou should have an easy time setting it up. This is especially important if it gets dark or rains. A-frame and dome tents for camping are simple to set up. On the other hand, cabin tents are not. It should also be easy to take down and store. VentilationAny tent for camping which you select need to have the right amount of air flow. Try and find ones that have side openings on all 4 sides. Tents for camping with mesh screens provide for continuous airflow and keeps out bugs and debris. You’ll be glad you did if you’re in an area with lots of mosquitoes! It’s also a good idea to check out camping tent reviews before purchasing. Visit tent critic to learn about the best tents for camping.

Coleman Stoves – 7 Tips On Caring And Cleaning

      July 30th, 2010

Coleman stoves are more efficient and look more dazzling when it’s in clean, and in spick and span shape. Proper cleaning and caring for your Coleman stoves would ensure you that it stays in top shape, looking brand new and will reap you benefits including better fuel efficiency, control of flame and absence of rust and oxidization.
Here are some tips on caring and cleaning for your Coleman stoves to make sure they last a long time doing cooking service for you and your family.
First tip: Clean your stove every after use to avoid build-up on burners. When it’s not going to be used for some time, you should still clean it regularly. Wipe the surface of your camping stove with warm water and dishwashing soap. It is very important that you dry it completely before storing.
Second tip: For more thorough cleaning, especially after a boil-over, unscrew the burner rings and bowls to check if there are any fluid or food debris on the manifold. In case there is build-up, soap with dishwashing detergent diluted with warm water then rinse it with clean water.
Third tip: For worse case like heavy volumes of grease and dirt build-up inside the case or on the burners, it is a good idea to bring the stove to a car wash for high-pressurized washing. Turn the stove upside down after the clean up to ensure that there is no water residue inside the manifold that can cause for it to rust and disrupt the efficiency of the stove.
Fourth tip: Store your Coleman stove properly after cleaning. Place it inside a plastic bag and seal it so that spiders or other crawling insects that can block fuel and airflow will not be able to crawl their way through the stove. This is also important to keep it dry and prevent rusting of the parts. .
Fifth tip: If you have a liquid fuel stove, it is important that you transfer as much fuel as possible from the fuel tank to the fuel can to avoid the build-up of on the fuel tube of the tank. This is necessary to avoid fuel build-up on the fuel tube which can restrict the flow of fuel to the generator and burner.
Sixth tip: Oil the pump cup on the tank’s pump plunger with machine oil at least two times every year to allow the cup to seal against the inside of pump barrel and keep the pump working smoothly.
Seventh tip: Read the manual of the stove carefully and follow all instructions for cleaning and caring.
Take care of your Coleman stove, needless to say, it is a worthy camping equipment investment.
But making a camping trip a great family time is not all about fun and games. It’s not all about great food and great hiking. Sure, you have to bring your family to a nice camping site and create exciting and wonderful camping activities and games for them, but also one of the most important aspects of camping that you should never overlook is camp safety.

Keep Everything Together with these Backpacks

      July 30th, 2010

Once confined to hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts, backpacks have become mainstream during recent years, carried by everyone from kindergarten students to busy moms and business execs, all of whom have one need in common: convenient, portable storage for their gear.

Offering a convenient location to store pens, pencils, books and notebooks, backpacks have become a ubiquitous accessory for school kids of all ages, and have even gained a foothold among adults who use them to tote everything from laptops to diapers.

Backpack manufacturers have responded by offering a wide variety of styles and sizes to suit pretty much anyone’s needs, and it’s a good idea to spend some time reviewing those options before making a final purchase decision. Here are a few important backpack features to consider before making your choice:

      Backpack Size

Backpacks come in a variety of sizes, from small packs that are light enough for a small child to carry comfortably, to large packs better suited for high school or college kids, as well as adults looking for a convenient piece of carry-on luggage or overnight bag. Smaller packs, like the Olympia 16-inch Campus Backpack, are ideal for lightweight loads, and can do double-duty as a purse or small briefcase. Men and women with larger loads to carry might prefer the roomy interior of Ogio’s Metro or Epic Midnight Limited Edition Backpacks, or the Jumbo Leather Backpack.

      Rolling Backpacks

Originally introduced as a portable carry-on bag, rolling backpacks have gained in popularity with many students and inner-city commuters, who appreciate the option of toting large amounts of books and other items without having to bear the weight. Rolling backpacks like the Verucci Flight Carry-on/ Rolling Pink Backpack and the J World 19. 5-inch Touches Blue Rolling Backpack/ Laptop Sleeve offer stylish prints and patterns, while the Verucci Brown Flight Carry-on Rolling Backpack is better suited for more serious business events. Students and adults alike will appreciate the sporty styles of CalPak’s Night Vision 18-inch Rolling Backpack and CalPak G-roller Backpack.

      Backpack Style

Just like a purse or briefcase, your backpack can reflect your unique style and personality, from fun and fashionable to studious and businesslike. Fun fabric designs, like those offered on CalPak ‘S Curve’ 18-inch Lightweight Backpack or J World’s 19. 5-inch Check Red Rolling Backpack with Laptop Sleeve are lighthearted options for the young-at-heart. While more reserved designs include the Amerileather Urban Buckle-Flap Backpack and the Leather Three-way Backpack, whose unique design allows you to carry it on your back, over your shoulder, or by a hand-held strap.

      Backpack Storage

While early multi-use backpacks had one main storage area with a single pocket on the outside, today’s backpacks offer a variety of storage areas specifically designed for a wide variety of purposes and items, including electronic devices like laptops and portable music players. To make the best choice for your needs, consider carefully what you’ll be using the backpack for, as well as the items you’ll need to carry in it.

Carrying a laptop? The Trailmaker Laptop Backpack offers both an internal, fully padded laptop sleeve as well as a cell phone pocket conveniently located on the shoulder strap. For really heavy-duty use, consider the Wenger Swiss Gear Austin Laptop Backpack, by the makers of the original Swiss Army Knife, which offers a pocket for your iPod or MP3 player, as well as a headset port. Also offering an earphone port, the CalPak Apez 18-inch Multi-pocket Backpack features multiple pockets of varying sizes, as well as self-repairing zippers to make sure all your contents are kept safe and secure.

      Hiking Backpacks

Unlike their more urban and suburban counterparts, hiking backpacks are designed for the serious outdoor enthusiast who wants to hit the trail for a few days, carrying clothing, food, a tent and other supplies. Backpacks became frequent among travelers during the 1960s, when hitchhikers and other itinerant travelers recognized their versatility and convenience. Those heavy packs, with cumbersome external frames, have been replaced today by lightweight, internal frame versions that offer far greater durability than their predecessors. Designed to support heavier loads, these packs help distribute the weight evenly along your back, reducing muscle strain that can result from uneven loads.

Packs like the Teton Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack feature padded waist belts and padded lumbar area to help reduce strain from prolonged wear. Many backpacks, like the High Peak Kathmandu 70 + 10 Internal Frame Pack, even feature built-in hydration systems that allow you easy and convenient access to drinking water while you’re hiking, without having to stop and remove your pack.

The lightweight designs and multi-featured practicality of today’s backpacks make them a smart choice for people of all ages and walks of life. The wide selection of modern and traditional materials, coupled with colorful, unique designs means that there is a backpack that’s just right for your needs.

How to relax In an Eco-Friendly Way

      July 30th, 2010

Hammocks are, arguably, the most comfortable and natural ancient means of rest available to man today. The medical community has even sounded in on the clamor, prescribing these free standing beds as therapeutic devices for people suffering ailments from blood pressure, autism, lack of concentration, and back trauma. So, why all the fuss over hammocks? For one, they are basically an effortless Yoga lesson and meditation session in one calm, heavenly sitting. For another thing, they are cost effective and simple to attain. And, the hammock is considerably eco friendly.

The most utilitarian and common construction, and also one of the most popular and comfortable, is the woven rope hammock chair, and these can be found in many different fabrics. Cotton is largely the most comfortable, but is also the easiest to stretch and ruin when left out too frequently in the harsh outdoor elements. The best solution to this, of course, is to bring the cotton woven hammock inside or under a shelter during harsh weather such as rain storms and snow. Always allow your hammock to air dry if it gets wet.

Next we have polyester and nylon fabrics, which are both more durable and colorfast than their cotton counterparts. The sacrifice: an ounce of comfort. Many report a more stiff, less flexible, less breathable, and less comfortable rest in hammocks created of man made materials. After time and use, these fabrics will eventually soften up and become more ergonomic, giving the user the comfort that they seek with the strength and resilience that they hoped for. Both cotton and man-made fabrics can be woven, netted, quilted, or stretched. This is a matter of preference, so try them out for feel and comfort.

The hammock stands that you choose can also be environmentally sound. If you are able to hang your hammock between two trees, kudos to you! Half of your battle is won, for most don’t have this luxury. If you need to build or buy a stand, try to stick with the plentiful wooden and recycled metal or alloy products. This will ensure that you not only get the stability and strength that you need, but that you don’t introduce harmful elements into your green, eco-friendly lifestyle. For added interest, you might check out some of the hammocks that are available in a durable and extra comfortable hemp rope material. These can also be weaved or netted.

      Glimmer of Hope: A One-shot Part 2

      July 30th, 2010

here’s the second part of the one-shot…. make sure to read part 1 first!!! :) ~~~~~~~~~ “So since you’re living in Brown I’m guessing you’re a sophomore,” Jesse asked as we rode the elevator up to the 9th floor. “Yeah, what about you? Are you a junior?” I asked. “Nope, a sophomore too. It helps to know juniors,” Jesse said referring to his housing arrangements. Once we got off the elevator we walked down the hall to Jesse’s room and as he predicted his roommates weren’t there. “Let me get air mattress out,” he said grabbing one from his closet and blowing it up. “You can take the bed and I’ll sleep on the air mattress,” Jesse offered. “It’s fine, I’ll sleep on the air mattress, but you wouldn’t have anything I could borrow to change would you? The wet clothes aren’t very comfortable,” I said. “Sure, let me find something. Here,” he said tossing me a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt. “Bathroom’s across the hall.” “Thanks,” I replied taking the clothes into the bathroom and changing. When I got back Jesse had finished setting up the air mattress and had changed out of his wet clothes as well. “Are you sure you don’t want to take the bed?” Jesse asked. “Yeah, I’m sure,” I said laying down on the air mattress. “Thanks again for letting me stay here,” I said. “No problem,” Jesse replied. It didn’t take me long to fall asleep and when I woke up I saw that Jesse was already awake. “Morning,” Jesse said noticing I was awake. I smiled checking my phone noticing I had 15 text
