There are five beaches that I find unforgettable along the West Coast Trail. These beaches have some remarkable feature that adds a special experience to the camping on this amazing backpacking adventure. The West Coast Trail has become a defining experience for British Columbia’s outdoor folk who ever strive for new adventures to fill the need to commune with the wild and powerful part of their province. The wildness of Camper Bay, Walbran Creek, Dare Beach, Klanawa River, and Tsusiat Falls have made an indelible mark on my psyche,

The campsite at Camper Bay is just behind a large gravel bar that serves as the beach at the outlet of Camper Creek. In the forest at this site, the Quu’as First Nation Trailkeepers have a cabin. Contact with these guardians is highly probable here. The main beach campsite here is protected from the roar of the waves by the gravel bar. Camping is also available on the bar, but it is a bit more difficult to find a flat spot to tent on. The sand and cobble area up near the forest edge is bounded by a vertical cliff and a steep forest edge next to the creek. This is a calm and peaceful campsite, a place for rest along the trail. Hikers from the East encounter this camp after making the way around Owen Point.

Walbran Creek also has a large gravel bar at the end of a creek. Here, the creek is dammed up into a small lake, good for swimming, and there is a long, beautiful beach at the end of the creek. This is an open, spread out beach with lots of logs and driftwood. It is a classic west coast beach. Although there is a cable car across the wide creek/lake, it is usually possible to wade across Walbran Creek near the tide line. Camping in and among the logs makes for cozy camping, sheltered from ocean breeze.

Dare Beach is a long sand beach with surf crashing up along most of its length. It is an awesome beach that surfers would love to visit. On one of my trips I passed a surfer/hiker who was carrying his surfboard with him-not an easy task-on the way to this beach. Although I never heard from him again, I can’t help but imagine that he had some fantastic rides. Dare Beach is not a usual camp site, but it is worth spending a couple of hours just soaking in the waves and sheer presence of the mighty Pacific here.

The beach at Klanawa River also has an extensive log jam and dammed creek, making a nice swimming hole. This beach is less used than most, so it gives a more solitary feel. There are a couple of larger clearings in the forest available for those who want some protection from the wind and surf sound of the waves. The logs at the point that closes off the creek are formed into a natural camping area. A few extra logs have made it into a sheltered structure, big enough for a tent and a campfire.

The beach at Tsusiat Falls is a long and popular camping area. The pool at the bottom of the falls is a good swimming hole. The falls are available for a cool, clean shower if you can stay under the water. Camping stretches out along the beach for quite a long way. Some sites are under a cliff, so some caution is necessary. There is plenty of space for a large number of hikers at this beach. The trail away from the beach up onto the forest trail is steep and short. The view from the bridge above at Tsusiat Creek is another remarkable view, as the water just disappears over an edge of sky and sea.

There are other beaches of note on the trail, but I found these the most memorable. No matter where you camp on this trail, it is amazing. The power and influence of the Pacific Ocean on every small speck of this trail is apparent as any hiker wanders through the forests and over the beaches along the West Coast Trail.

The idea of hiking is simple. It is walking outdoors, usually over an extended time period and in a natural terrain. How to define “extended time period” and “natural terrain” is pretty much up to the hiker. Some prefer adventures contained within a single day while others look to cover a wider area over a longer period of time.

Hiking is the most basic of outdoor activities although the act itself can be very complicated depending upon the terrain. There are places that cannot be reached any way other than on foot. Some will argue that the best way to see nature is by walking trails. When you are on foot, there are none of the distractions associated automobile noises or smells. You can truly be one with your surroundings. Every sense is involved. You can see the beauty of nature around you. You can hear the birds and the rustling leaves. You can smell cleaner air than you may have believed existed. You can feel the crunch of soil under your feet.

There are a few things to consider if you are considering taking up hiking as an activity. It is best to begin with short hikes. These shorter sessions will allow your muscles to adjust to walking on something other than smooth, flat pavement. They will also help you to build up the endurance you will need for a longer adventure. Staying relatively close to your home base or starting point will also help you to be and feel more secure. If you do lose your way on a trail, you won’t be far from where you started. It will also help you to judge how much water and other supplies you may need on a longer hike.

Another important consideration is hiking equipment. Shoes are an important item for the hiker. Some time and thought should be put into choosing the proper footwear. Boots are not a requirement, especially for shorter sessions. What is important is to choose a shoe that is designed for walking, including having a non slip type of sole. One mistake some beginners make is buying a new pair of shoes and immediately going out and hitting a trail. New shoes should be worn around the house and around town to help break them in. This will also give your foot some time to adjust to the feel of the shoe.

Author: Byron Tabor Copyright: All Right Reserved Worldwide

Camping hiking gear or apparatus that one requires with on an outdoors climbing or backpacking vacation can vary relying on what sort of trip and where. Even though walking is regarded distinct from backpacking (overnight camping), the tools of requirement is of the shorter time period and much more practical in dynamics for this kind of a walk. However even for any day time journey it is prudent to pack at least standard options for scenarios that may possibly arise which includes getting made to stay the night, getting lost, or accidental injuries. Weight and bulk limit the amount of camping hiking gear that one can transport (particularly if one follows the basic principle of Leave No Trace and does not dispose of goods around the trail). Criteria for packing an item include weight, mass (size), quantity of option utilizes plus the odds of every of those utilizes apparent, weighed against the significance. For instance, a whistle may well seem unlikely to become required, but could be actual life saver when it does and weighs next to nothing. Some other camping hiking gear, like a sleeping bag, may also be essential yet can also be really restricting, so a simpler alternative as an extra layer of clothes may possibly be a much better concept. Hiking gear may possibly be thought to be in a number of categories but here it will likely be divided into these five, products worn, carrying goods, essential equipment, foods and drink, and optional products. Items worn may be described as something that a hiker wears such as footwear, clothes, head equipment, and so on. Backpacks and waist packs are regarded carrying goods. Objects which are essential for the hike safety or needed in possible emergency situations is important gear. Meals items to take into account would be considered a snack or lunch. And any other products that the hiker desires to bring together such as chairs, notebooks, hammocks, camera. . . are all regarded as being optional goods. The hiker will typically think about clothing objects very first depending on the anticipated climate and demands in the particular hike area. Numerous hikers wear walking boots or shoes. These are available in a wide variety of high best (greater ankle support), or reduced best (a lot more comfortable) designs. Some hikers wear various rugged outdoor sandals. Shoes ought to be rugged sufficient for that terrain envisioned (hiking boots for any rocky mountain, vs sneakers over a paved rail trail). Hikers will typically look at h2o proofing the boots or shoes according to the weather (rainfall, snow or slush), along with the nature with the trail (swampy or wet). Together with shoes most hikers should also take into account socks that will help wick sweat from the hiker’s ft, provide warmth, and supply buffering inside the shoe. Socks as with boots, ought to be provided unique attention to (ie. no irritating ridge above the toes). Shoes is naturally vital for lengthy distance trekking. Outfits are finest put on in layers, so one can very easily adapt to changing circumstances. So two thin sweaters make additional sense than one thick one. Also, on overnight excursions, continue to keep one established of outfits dry for evenings and nights (ie. a jogging match) and put the working day clothing back on before one begins trekking, even if they are wet. A warm hat or cap, even when no cold climate is anticipated, may be the finest insulator due to the fact lots of entire body heat escapes via the head (”If your feet are cold, set over a hat”). A hat may also present safety through the sun. A big handkerchief can are available in handy for numerous purposes, including a rough water filter, a thin scarf or perhaps a bandanna to maintain the sweat out of one’s eyes. Plus a rain coat or parka preferably either one that fits over the backpack or accompanied by a separate pack liner. The hiker then considers what camping hiking gear is desired to take the gear in and what products to take based upon the hike. This may be straightforward fisherman’s jacket or perhaps a day-pack for short hikes, or possibly a total backpack. If heading on a backpacking vacation, contemplate a backpack where camping hiking gear could be attached towards outside and hang through the backpack. This leaves the hands free to move with no carrying more goods. The important items necessary for hikers is going to vary as nicely. It is really a good concept to hold a pocket knife, perhaps with a tin opener, a saw, and tweezers for removing thorns and such. Flashlights, trail maps with ample detail, a compass and roughly understanding which way is North can already make a large distinction if lost. A little 1st aid kit could aid in-case there is an injury. Matches, a lighter, a flint or fire-steel (usually work, even when wet), candles, or tinder plus expertise how you can start a fire. In emergencies, a campfire may be one from the greatest life savers (warmth and signalling) and it isn’t as effortless to produce as some might think. A fire also keeps up the spirits, which may also be a life saver. Meals and drinks is very a lot explanatory. Some in the camping hiking gear things more than looked are a water flask (in addition h2o if desired), h2o purification tablets and/or filter, and plastic bags of numerous kinds. Meals that’s carried should preferably be using a low drinking water content to preserve the fat down. Plastic bags of numerous kinds and sizes to continue to keep points dry and pack issues out. Ziploc bags are extremely functional simply because they’re simply closed and opened. Garbage bags could be utilized to line the backpack with, but additionally to place in one’s shoes to keep the ft cozy, even when the socks are currently wet. Optional items to think about are dependant on the length from the trip as well because the objective. There are lots of camping hiking gear products to take into account. For sleeping it is usually as easy as an added pair of clothing or possibly a mat, sleeping bag, tent, hammock, etc. To protect the hikers skin one particular could use insect repellent, sun cream, or clothes. Other additional extras are toilet paper, mosquito net, pillow, string, rope, fishing line and fish hooks, little axe, cooking pot, eating utensils, rain pants, towel, super glue, soap, GPS, cell mobile phone. . . as well as the list goes on. Wherever ever the hiker or camper goes or stays one thing is for certain, the camping hiking gear can be a requirement to possess a enjoyable secure journey.

More and more people today enjoy the simple, wholesome fun of hiking. hiking is an affordable, yet healthy and emotionally rewarding way to spend a vacation or a long weekend and you don’t need to visit a travel agent.
Experienced hikers will always tell you that every detail matters when you pack hiking gear, especially tents and camping stoves. The right hiking accessories and clothing, a properly and ergonomically packed backpack, positive mood and good fitness all these elements play an equally important role in the success of any hiking trip.
hiking boots are the most important part of your hiking gear. The right footwear will serve you longer and take you farther and safer than any training shoes or sneakers will. You can wear a cheaper pair of pants or an old t-shirt, but a good reliable pair of hiking shoes or boots should be as expensive as you can afford.
Many people consider their jackets as another important clothing item for a hiker, especially in the colder periods of the year. A hiking jacket can be a true lifesaver if you choose well. A Gore-Tex top layer will shield you from cold, wet, and windy weather. Many hiking jacket manufacturers use a layering approach in their jackets, so that an outer shell layer becomes not insulation, but goes over insulating clothing. Underneath a Gore-Tex layer your can wear a lightweight and even trendy fleece jacket, which you can use in warmer months and for other sporting activities too.
Light weight towels should also one of your accessories
hiking tents are a must if you plan to camp in mountain regions in all three hiking seasons – spring, summer, and fall. hiking tents can be used for protection from storms, winds, small animals and insects. Along with a tent pack a sleeping bag and an insulating ground pad which also brings warmth as well as ironing out bumpy ground.
A lightweight, dependable back packing stove is much easier to use than campfires which are often prohibited in certain areas. A camping stove manufactured by such trustworthy brands as Primus and Coleman are basically a fuel container and a fire faucet with burner grates. These grates can collapse for compact storage. More expensive models even have electronic ignition so you won’t need matches or lighter. Although it is always a good idea to pack matches anyway in case of ignition failure. Another version of a camping stove is a storm cooker which basically consists of a spirit burner with windshield and handle and a pot or pan for cooking. These stoves are lightweight because you don’t need a propane container, but are sufficient for one or two people only.
The newest models of camping stoves are environmentally friendly, odor-free, and very accommodating. To cook and eat take a pot, spoon, and a cup. To start the camping stove, if you don’t have an ignition feature, lighters are more reliable than matches. Take more fuel than you initially planned camping stoves “eat” more fuel in cold weather.
To fully enjoy your hiking trip you must prepare beforehand. Even a small mistake in selecting your hiking equipment may result in an injury or at the least in discomfort and a negative experience. Check and fire up your camping stove while still at home and double check your hiking gear and equipment using a hiking checklist before you head out.

If you wish to travel back in time then there is perhaps no better place to choose for a hiking trip than the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Here centuries of wind and water have carved out deep canyons where the dinosaurs once roamed millions of years ago and where scientists today enjoy some of the world’s most extensive fossil deposits including the remains of saber-toothed tigers, three toes horses and ancient turtles. Near the Conata Picnic area at a site known as Pig Wallow, which is still being actively excavated today, scientists have discovered the bones of a remarkable hornless rhinoceros known as Subhyracodon and, if you are lucky enough you may be able to talk to one of the paleontologists as you hike through the area. Not all of the Badlands National Park is a barren moon-like landscape however and the park also includes some 64,000 acres of grassy wilderness grazed by bighorn sheep and American buffalo and home to the swift fox and black footed ferret, amongst many other creatures. You will also see many deer and antelope roaming around this section of the park. Within the 240,000 acres of the park hiking is very much a favorite activity with trails ranging from quite easy hikes for the beginner up to trails which will challenge even the most experienced hiker. But, whatever your level of experience, the end result when you get up onto the jagged spires and look out across the prairie below will be well worth the effort put in to get there. One fascinating area which is well worth exploring is the Stronghold District, half of which lies within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. During the Second World War this area was used as a firing range and this section of the park today houses the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, where you can take a look at the buildings which once housed one of America’s primary defense installations. For thirty years during the Cold War these installations were manned around the clock and today they are home to a fascinating museum where you can still see the underground launch control facility and a silo complete with a now disarmed nuclear missile. Another unique feature of the Badlands National Park is the homesteaders’ houses built from sod blocks and heated with buffalo chips. Although the period of the great dust bowl in the 1930s finally drove the homesteaders from the land, much of the evidence of the courageous struggle which they made all those years ago still remains today. The Badlands National Park is a wonderful place for hiking with its colored and golden sands and azure blue sky and provides plenty for the amateur and avid hiker alike. If you do decide to visit the area though do stop by the Ben Reifel Visitor Center where you will find a wealth of information which you will find especially useful if you are backpacking in the area and plan an overnight stay.

The hiking boots are possibly the most important piece of equipment, but have you thought about any other footwear, like socks? Believe it or not, selecting the Best Hiking Socks for your needs might be just as vital as selecting the right hiking boot. Even if you have the perfect boot, selecting the incorrect sort of socks, could ruin your adventure. Before beginning a hike, you need to select a pair of socks that is precisely designed to protect your feet. Hiking socks are available in a selection of styles. Each one is designed for a particular type of hike. They also come in an assortment of materials, each with their own flaws and benefits. When choosing the Best Hiking Socks, thinking about these items is paramount:Cotton isn’t suggested for any long walks. Cotton is not able to wick (capability to grab moisture and pull it away from your skin) Also, when it gets wet, the socks provide almost no warmth. Finally, the drying process is really slow. So be forwarned, most everyday socks are composed of cotton. There are four basic kinds of socks to decide on for your next trip:Liners – These are extraordinarily lightweight and are to be worn inside a thicker outer sock. They have great wicking capacities and add another layer to help keep blisters from appearing. Lightweight – Choose this type for warmer day short hikes. They’re going to provide some warmth, but they also assist with comfort and wicking. Mid-Weight – These provide more warmth and cushion than the lightweight type. You may wear this type with a liner on chillier day hikes. Heavy-Weight – These are the most durable of the hiking socks they are manufactured for long multi-day hikes. They are the thickest available and are usually worn during chillier hikes. They supply the most padding of all the sock styles. Always remember that it is not sufficient to choose the proper boot, you need to also decide on the proper sock. Having the best hiking socks for your hike could help to save your feet. Don’t wear the right boot and the incorrect socks.

Selecting the Best Hiking Boot to wear on your adventure is in all likelihood the most important piece of equipment. How come? Well, for the protection of your feet. The hiking footgear should match your type of hike. What is the type of the trail, steep or flat? Are you carrying a backpack? Is it heavy or light? Is it a day hike or are you going to be gone for a lot of days? Selecting the wrong pair of boots for your hiking adventure can ruin the whole trip. You want to choose the best hiking boot for your needs. There are a plethora of choices for hiking boots, let’s look at a few of the differences?Materials – Leather, Synthetic or a combination of the two. Waterproof can be an option. Boot Cut – Low, Medium and high. Let’s talk about price. It is not recommended to choose a hiking boot solely because it is on sale. Your boots should last a long time and if you are just looking at the price and not their intended function, you may wind up purchasing a boot that will not meet your needs. Also, remember that you need to take care of your boots. Reiterating, your boots will last you a long time, they are designed to receive a large amount of abuse. So, take care of them. Every hiking boot has its particular care program, make sure to read and follow the instructions given by the manufacturer. Lastly, take the boots on a shorter length hike in order to break them in. Maybe wear them around the house or out for a day of errands. It is not good to get on the trail on a lengthy hike and try to break them in. Only the basics are described above, to get you thinking about how to choose the Best Hiking Boot for your requirements. I have written a complete article that describes, with detailed descriptions and examples, a list of your Best Hiking Boot types. Purchasing the right footwear could be the most important part of your hiking adventure. Do not select the wrong boot and get stuck in the woods.

Is lightweight hiking and backpacking viable in cold weather? I think so. Last Fall I was in four feet of snow at 13,000 feet – in my running shoes and with just 11 pounds on my back for an overnighter. Crazy? I don’t think so. Anyhow, I have been going lightweight for too many years to want to go back to a heavy pack and hiking boots. Heading For Crestone Peak

It was September 2006. I was in the Sangre De Christo Mountains in Colorado, hiking up the trail to South Colony Lakes. I just surprised a large buck, who snorted and ran off. I started to see more patches of snow as I went higher. I poked at the frozen puddles with my walking stick.

I had hoped to climb Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle earlier in the month, but was rained out. Then it snowed heavily in the high country on September 18. I started checking the online forums to see if anyone was still climbing these “fourteeners” (mountains higher than 14,000 feet). Someone did mentioned climbing Crestone through the snow – which I didn’t want to do.

However, by the 28th there had been several warm days, so maybe the snow melted. It had where I parked the car. But by the time I hiked to South Colony Lakes a few hours later, I was almost knee-deep in it. Then, up above the lakes and beyond the last of the trees, the snow was even deeper.

My shoes and socks were soaked, but the sun and the climb kept me warm. I continued because it really looked like there was bare rock up near the peaks. Eventually I adjusted my goal to just getting to Broken-Hand Pass, where I could look down into the San Luis Valley. I made it to within 100 yards.

It was so steep and the snow so deep, that I slid back at least as far as I stepped each time. Then I slipped and needed to self-arrest with my walking stick to keep from sliding down a few hundred feet. It was clear that I was under-equipped for climbing any further. Lightweight Backpacking

Hiking down was worse (it often is). I sunk into the snow and hit my shins against rocks hidden there. I walked on top of the snow crust at times, until I suddenly broke through – which I did when I stopped to look at some bobcat tracks. At least I didn’t have much weight on my back.

I had 11 pounds, to be exact. The pack itself weighed a pound or so. My down sleeping bag weighed 17 ounces, and the tarp 16 ounces. I also had food and water and dry socks. Going lightweight meant I hardly even noticed the pack – even after 13 miles of hiking.

Back down near the lakes it was time to put my lightweight hiking and backpacking skills and equipment to the test. It would be about 24 degrees Fahrenheit that night.

I found a nice grassy area where the snow had melted away. The sun was still bright and warm, so I laid out my wet socks and shoes to dry on a large log while I ate mixed nuts, wrote some notes, and then took a nap. Several deer walked by an hour later. I woke up gripping my walking stick like a weapon.

Everything was dry, so I put on my shoes and got busy. It took about 20 minutes to collect dry grass and old thistle stalks to make a thick mattress. This was for comfort as well as for insulation to keep me warm. I set a piece of plastic over this, and strung the tarp overhead. Then I laid out the sleeping bag to fluff it up.

I collected some dry wood and tinder and laid a fire, just in case I needed it later (I never did). I covered this with a few pieces of bark to keep frost, snow or rain off of it. I ate some wild currants and rose hips. I saved my corn chips for a bedtime meal. The fat would heat me up as it digested. I used my walking stick to lift the bag with the rest of the food up to a high branch where it would hang for the night.

I put on my thermal underwear, hat and gloves. I used my shoes with the backpack on top of them for a pillow. The wind started blowing, so I lowered one side of the tarp before going to sleep.

The frost was heavy and the ice was thick on the puddles in the morning, but I had managed to sleep well. I packed up, scattered the mattress materials so they wouldn’t smother the plants underneath, and I ate some crackers. The sun was just rising as I hit the trail.

I probably had just 9 pounds total on my back by now. That may seem very lightweight for backpacking, but I had everything I needed. I even had a camera with me. I stopped hiking long enough to take a photo of Crestone Needle in the morning sun. I’ll be on top of it this summer.

Are you interested in going on a fun filled hiking adventure? If you are, you are definitely not alone. In the United States, a large number of individuals enjoy hiking, often whenever they get the chance to do so.

Although there is a good chance that you may have gone hiking before, there is also a chance that this hiking adventure may be your first one. If that is the case, you may be wondering what you should bring along with you. If you are, you will want to continue reading on, as some common hiking gear pieces and hiking supplies are outlined below for your convenience.

Before examining some of the common pieces of hiking gear that you should bring with you on your hiking adventure, as well as other hiking supplies, it is important that you take the length of your adventure into consideration. If you are planning on camping overnight on a hiking trail or in a hiking park, you will need to have some additional supplies, like a camping tent, sleeping bag, and so forth. The above mentioned items can serve as a great starting point for you, but you may also want to think about creating your own hiking adventure checklist.

When it comes to hiking gear, one of the most important pieces of gear that you will come across are hiking boots or hiking shoes. Many individuals do not know that they should actually go hiking in boots or shoes that are designed for hiking. Unfortunately, many individuals set out on a hike in traditional sneakers or even sandals. Hiking shoes are not only comfortable, as they are designed for hiking trail terrain, but they can also be used as a safety tool. With strong support for your feet and your ankles, hiking shoes and boots can help reduce your risk of injury in the event of a slip or a small fall.

A hiking stick is another piece of hiking gear that you may want to think about buying or brining along with you. Hiking sticks can be purchased from sport stores, but hiking sticks can also be found by scavenging through your backyard. Hiking sticks are not only nice because they look neat, but they can also help you keep your balance. Also, in the event that you fall or have a hiking accident, your hiking stick can be used to bang against rocks or something else to help get the attention of rescue workers or passerby’s.

As for the clothing that you will want to wear on your next hiking adventure, it will depend where you are going hiking, for how long, and what the weather will be like. You are advised to thoroughly examine the weather forecast before leaving for your hiking trip. Even if the weather is expected to be nice, you may still want to bring a few warm clothes with you, as you should also be prepared for the unexpected. An extra change of clothes is also advised. If you are concerned with space, you may want to think about look into buying some of those space saving bags, which are perfect for hiking.

You will also want to make sure that you bring a selection of food, snacks, and drinks with you on your next hiking adventure. As for drinks, you will find that water is the best. As for the snacks, you will want to make sure that you bring snacks that are easy to eat, like small bags of trail mix, pretzels, or other easy to eat and transport snacks. If you will be hiking and camping at the same time, you want to make sure that you bring more than just snacks; you will also want to bring real food. You may want to think about making yourself a few sandwiches, as well as bringing along a few pieces of fruit.

Additional items that you will want to bring along with you on your next hiking adventure include a map of the hiking park or hiking trail in question, a compass, a cell phone, and a first aid kit. Of course, these items, in most cases, are optional, but they are items may make your next hiking adventure enjoyable, as well as safe.
