My Survival Pack – An Overview

This is just a short video of the survival gear that I have. If you have any questions about anything just let me know and I’ll get back to you asap. What I need very soon is a water filter pump and a tent. The backpack is actually is a military ALICE pack. It’s extremely comfortable, more than my last backpack which was an original Alps RedTail. The pack has a kidney strap and has the quick release style shoulder straps. I added two more straps with buckles to the bottom of the pack so that I could carry my sleeping bag. The big black case is my mummy-style sleeping bag and I also managed to stuff in an extra cotton/wool blanket. I would also like to mention that in PA there is no blade length for knives so don’t say that my knives are illegal, because they aren’t.

Cheap Tent And Festival Survival

Taking a cheap tent away with you to a festival weekend is ideal. Why would you need anything more expensive? You know you’re going to be surrounded by party animals. What are the chances of you salvaging the remains of your tent afterwards?

Festivals, such as Glastonbury, Reading and Isle of Wight, are fun. You can go there and have the time of your life. Throughout the years these festivals have grown more and more popular, and the number of people going has risen dramatically. This also means a rise in tent numbers out in that field. With the numbers sometimes nearing 100,000, it can be quite cosy out on that pitch.

This is why a cheap tent is perfect to take with you. Imagine if all those 100,000 people get drunk. They’ll be stumbling around all day and night. They’ll be tripping over guy ropes, falling into tents, ripping the material and snapping poles. But you’ll also be part of the drunken crowd, and you won’t care. You’ll just prop it back up again and bodge a repair so that it sees you through the rest of the weekend. You may even ruin a few tents yourself by diving onto them. Then come the day you have to go home, you’ll stand back and take one look at your tent. Now it’s decision time. Is this tent worth salvaging?

It all depends on how much damage it has sustained. If there’s hardly any, then great. Pack it away, take it home and use it again. If there’s a lot, then it’s down to you to decide whether you can fix it. If you can salvage what you have – maybe with the need of buying another pole or two, or gluing some of the fabric together again – then do it. It can quite easily be used for your next festival, and if it gets trashed there even more, then you haven’t wasted any money. But, however, if it is completely destroyed and still has the person who dived on it lying there, you may as well say goodbye to it.

Most people leave their tents there. They purchase a cheap tent, expecting to only use it once, and then abandon it. For some, even the thought of dismantling it and packing it back in its bag is enough to make them want to leave it. If your tent is still in good condition, then this is fine to do. After a festival, most of these are collected and taken for charity, but if your tent is ruined and useless, then it won’t be going anywhere but the bin. In these cases, do the right thing. Take it back with you. Dump it when you get home. Leaving a useless tent behind is the same as leaving all your rubbish. It’s bad for the environment and creates a hell of a job for someone to clean up.

Knowing what you’re getting your tent into, that there’s a high chance it won’t make it out of the festival alive and in once piece, would you spend a fortune on it? No. It will be money down the drain. The best thing to do is invest in a cheap tent. They’re just as good as any expensive one.

The Urban Survivalist team goes out to the Northern Californian mountains on a bug-out style camping trip. We didn’t have any tents or sleeping bags. Just us and our constructed shelters. For food, Jon and Nate enjoyed their first Mountain House Meal, and Matt had a hot can of beans.

Survival Equipment…Can You Trust Your Life To Electronics?

If you or a loved one is lost while camping or hiking, the thought of survival should never enter your mind. In this day and age, someone who is lost should only be thinking about being rescued. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that too many people that go missing in the wilderness are not found until it is too late. The National Association of Search and Rescue estimates that there are more than 50,000 search and rescue missions launched each year in the United States alone. The majority of them are for victims whose location is unknown. Sadly in many cases the rescue turns into a retrieval. While camping and/or hiking, you should always be prepared for anything. Your camping equipment should always include a solar blanket, a waterproof fire starter, and some type of signaling device. Never use a conventional flare gun, as it can start fires. There are different types of electronic signaling devices, but it all comes down to basically two kinds, that depend on satellite technology. Personally, I can’t always rely on my satellite TV, so I’m not sure I want to put my life on the line, based on finding a signal in bad weather. Also, these units are quite cost prohibitive for the average camper. A GPS can run in the neighborhood of $500-$ 700 each. The other electronic option is the new Personal Locator Beacons, also known as PLBs. At first glance they seem to be very cost effective. However, the $150 price tag has additional monthly fees, that could ultimately exceed a regular GPS unit. These kinds of devices don’t pin point your location, so you will still need something to signal with. The other thing that seems to be overlooked is the fact that this kind of electronic equipment does noone any good, if for example dad has the unit and it’s his thirteen-year-old who has suddenly gone missing. He could be miles away from the signal, so where do you go from there? I don’t feel that the future must all be electronic. I have come up with a patent pending concept that is so cost effective, an entire family of four can outfit themselves, for what one GPS unit will cost. The LifeTracker makes it possible for people to be found before panic on both sides will ever set in. It not only will save lives, but millions of dollars in search and rescue man hours. The LifeTracker is a device that in case of an emergency will, with the pull of a cord, jettisons a heavy gauge red balloon attached to a 1000 ft fishing line up high enough for searchers or a rescue plane to see. The LifeTracker is a series of 3 different products designed to locate anyone lost in the wilderness, in hours rather than days. The LifeTracker Belt. . . 4″ wide with pockets on the outside to store a thermal blanket and other survival supplies. The LifeTracker Vest. . . Using the same concept as the “Belt” the vest inner side unzips to release a folded lean-to tent complete with telescopic 3 ft poles. Some people will prefer a vest and are willing to pay extra for the complete survival package. This offers a great option, and like the “Belt”, is very marketable. The LifeTracker Flare Gun. . . Flare guns are very expensive and, of course, the flare only has a short life. With a small adjustment to the LifeTracker Device, it can easily be kept in a lightweight pistol, that can be stored in any backpack, vehicle, boat or plane. It might even have military use. The LifeTracker Series can be manufactured and sold inexpensively enough so that anyone who camps, hikes, rock climbs, or just ventures into the wilderness, will want to include it as part of their gear. In this day and age of electronics, it’s refreshing to find something that is completely mechanical. There are no batteries or bad reception to worry about. Also, both the “Belt” and “Vest” have practical use. Even if the rescue device is never activated, the gear becomes part of everyday wilderness attire.
